BlackBerry 6 OS Update For BlackBerry Bold 9700 T-Mobile Now Rolling Out!
BlackBerry 6 for 9700 totally revamps the user interface of the device. It brings along a more polished, sophisticated and fluid-smooth user interface with a plethora of enhancements and improvements laced with a host of interesting features.
For instance, the universal search feature, streamlined multimedia player, a built-in YouTube app, sms group sharing, new camera modes, efficient multitasking, sleek UI design, tabbed web browsing with the new and faster web-kit browser and social feeds integration totally revamp the look and feel of the OS.
As a refresher, the BlackBerry Bold 9700 was released in the month of October, 2009 and features a 2.4" high-res display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, 256MB of onboard storage with microSD expansion card support, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, onboad GPS and even more.
The T-Mobile BlackBerry 6 for BlackBerry 9700 gadget upgrade is now available for users to download from T-Mobile's web portal.

RIM confirms Android app support for BlackBerry PlayBook
The BlackBerry Tablet OS device will run Android apps via a custom software “app player” to be published by RIM, which will allow apps specifically designed for Android 2.3 to run on the company's new tablet. Developers will have to repackage apps and submit them to BlackBerry's app store, but that will apparently be a rather simple process.
Here's a bit from the announcement:
RIM will launch two optional “app players” that provide an application run-time environment for BlackBerry Java(R) apps and Android v2.3 apps. These new app players will allow users to download BlackBerry Java apps and Android apps from BlackBerry App World and run them on their BlackBerry PlayBook.

Developers wanting to bring their new and existing apps to the highly anticipated BlackBerry(R) PlayBook(TM) tablet will soon have additional tools and options to enhance and expand their commercial opportunities. Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced plans to greatly expand the application ecosystem for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook is scheduled to launch in the U.S. and Canada on April 19.
RIM will launch two optional “app players” that provide an application run-time environment for BlackBerry Java(R) apps and Android v2.3 apps. These new app players will allow users to download BlackBerry Java apps and Android apps from BlackBerry App World and run them on their BlackBerry PlayBook.
In addition, RIM will shortly release the native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook enabling C/C++ application development on the BlackBerry(R) Tablet OS. For game-specific developers, RIM is also announcing that it has gained support from two leading game development tooling companies, allowing developers to use the cross-platform game engines from Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to bring their games to the BlackBerry PlayBook.
Support for BlackBerry Java and Android Apps
“The BlackBerry PlayBook is an amazing tablet. The power that we have embedded creates one of the most compelling app experiences available in a mobile computing device today,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “The upcoming addition of BlackBerry Java and Android apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook on BlackBerry App World will provide our users with an even greater choice of apps and will also showcase the versatility of the platform.”
Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility. The new optional app players will be available for download from BlackBerry App World and will be placed in a secure “sandbox” on the BlackBerry PlayBook where the BlackBerry Java or Android apps can be run.
Developers will simply repackage, code sign and submit their BlackBerry Java and Android apps to BlackBerry App World. Once approved, the apps will be distributed through BlackBerry App World, providing a new opportunity for many developers to reach BlackBerry PlayBook users. Users will be able to download both the app players and the BlackBerry Java and Android apps from BlackBerry App World.
The BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry Tablet OS are built on the QNX(R) Neutrino(R) microkernel architecture with a 1GHz dual core processor and a leading OpenGL solution, which allows RIM to make this incredibly broad platform support possible.

BlackBerry Tablet OS Development Tools
The BlackBerry Tablet OS already supports an incredibly robust platform with support for Web development standard HTML5, through the BlackBerry(R) WebWorks(TM) SDK for Tablet OS, and Adobe(R) AIR(R), through the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR. The BlackBerry Tablet OS is built from the ground up to run WebKit and Adobe(R) Flash(R) as well, giving developers a fast and true Web experience to leverage.
RIM is also announcing today that the BlackBerry Tablet OS Native Development Kit (NDK), which is currently in limited alpha release, will go into open Beta by this summer and be demonstrated at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to build high-performance, multi-threaded, native C/C++ applications with industry standard GNU toolchains. Developers can create advanced 2D and 3D applications and special effects by leveraging programmable shaders available in hardware-accelerated OpenGL ES 2.0.
Other features of the BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to:
Take advantage of the QNX POSIX library support and C/C++ compliance for quick and easy application porting and for creating native extensions for both BlackBerry and Android applications
Easily integrate device events like gesture swipes and touch screen inputs
Integrate the BlackBerry Tablet OS environment into existing code management and build systems using industry standard Eclipse CDT (C/C++ Development Tools)
Leverage work done in standard C/C++ to make it easier to bring applications to the BlackBerry Tablet OS
Find and fix bugs quickly with provided debug and analysis tools

Gaming Engines
Building on the power of the BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK, RIM is working with leading gaming and application development technology providers such as Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to implement their native engines and application development platforms. Developers will be able to take advantage of these engines when building games and other applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook.
The Ideaworks Labs Airplay SDK is expected to include support for the BlackBerry Tablet OS soon, making it easy for publishers and developers to use their existing code to bring their games and apps to the BlackBerry PlayBook.
“Supporting a new OS can be a challenge for developers,” says Alex Caccia, President of Ideaworks Labs, “however, integration of the BlackBerry Tablet OS with the Airplay SDK makes this a non-issue. RIM has also been working closely with Unity Technologies, providers of the highly popular, multi-platform Unity development platform and Union, the firm's games distribution service. Through Union, dozens of high-quality Unity-authored games are slated to make their way to BlackBerry App World for the BlackBerry Playbook.

Availability
The new app players for the BlackBerry PlayBook are expected to be available from BlackBerry App World this summer. More information and demonstrations of the new app players will be shared at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will be available in beta later this year and will also be showcased at BlackBerry World.

BlackBerry Messenger coming to Android and iOS
The hugely popular BlackBerry Messenger service (BBM) is to be rolled out as Android and iOS compatible applications, new reports suggest.
Allowing BlackBerry users to send typed messages to each other completely free of charge, tech blog BGR has revealed “Research In Motion is planning to bring its beloved BlackBerry Messenger app and service to Android, and eventually to iOS as well.” Launch date and pricing information for the cross-platform BBM is still awaited.
The claimed sources reportedly informed BGR that: “RIM has not yet finalized details surrounding timing or pricing” They add: “We have heard that the company might make the software free to all users. We’re also told strategy is still being developed, however, and RIM may end up charging users a one-time fee or even a recurring fee for access to its BBM service on third-party platforms."
With the Apple app due to follow the reportedly imminent Android offering due to the easier to develop open platform the BGR report goes on to conclude: “Right now, we have heard that Android is definitely a go. But again, we’re not sure on timing, though our sources are confident that it will launch some time this year. RIM chose Android first because of the fact that it could develop and integrate something like this much easier with an open platform, but the plan is to build and deploy an iOS version at some point as well,”

BlackBerry Monaco makes brief video appearance with Verizon branding
Needless to say, the Storm 2′s past its prime — if it ever had a prime — and if Verizon is going to continue with the touchscreen BlackBerry theme, it needs to re-up fast. That would be where the so-called Monaco comes into play, a phone that’s been leaking under various names for over half a year now, and now we’ve got it captured on a brief, moderately blurry video with a Verizon logo clearly and prominently featured around back. It’s looking pretty laggy here, but it’s unclear how close the phone is to production — both the hardware and software (said to be BlackBerry OS 6.1 with mobile hotspot capability, among other features) could be extremely early or near final. RIM’s still got some repenting to do for the original Storm, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Monaco (which could come to market as the Storm 3, or some other name altogether) fits the bill. RIM's BlackBerry Java SDK v7.0 Beta Now Available
The SDK includes simulators for the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone devices and will allow developers to prepare their apps in time for the handsets' launch. The BlackBerry App World is currently accepting app submissions for the new devices.
According to Blackberry's website, some of the system's new capabilities include AR (augmented reality) and Open GL ES 2.0 support.
In addition, and in an effort to stay ahead of the game, near field communications (NFC) capabilities will also be available for mobile commerce. The contactless payment and authorization system has been generating quite some buzz, allowing mobile phone users to make purchases with their devices with touch-and-go like methods.
The BlackBerry Java Plug-in for Eclipse and the BlackBerry Java Development Environment have been updated to support the BlackBerry 7 OS as well.
The BlackBerry Java SDK v7.0 Beta is available for download now.
Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook updated
The updated Facebook app for the PlayBook now supports:
Video uploading: a much requested feature that allows users to make use of the tablet's high-res camera to record videos and upload them on to Facebook. Users can also upload videos that they didn't record i.e. clips sent to them by friends etc.
Facebook Search Enhancements: Facebook Search has been enhanced with a more intuitive access point and improved search capabilities. Users can now filter friends with the friends search, find long lost friends with the Everyone search or even look for their favorite bands or TV shows with the Pages search.
Improved Access to Pages: users now have a Pages tab where they can easily access all their own Pages and Pages that they've liked.
Message Deletion: Facebook messages can now be deleted from the tablet itself. Take note that messages deleted from the app will be permanently removed from the account, so you won't be able to access them elsewhere.
Photo Upload Album Selection: users now have the ability to select which album they would like to upload their images to when uploading from the tablet itself.
News Feed Improvements: the News Feeds feature of the app has been improved to give users even more interaction with posts without having to leave the News Feed View.
Options and Help Center: the icons for these features have been moved to the swipe down bar on the BlackBerry PlayBook.
The update will be included with the PlayBook v1.0.5 update or can be downloaded separately from the BlackBerry App World.

Google improves search for BlackBerry 6.0 devices
The latest update to the search engine brings to the BlackBerry: faster searches with autocomplete and history queries that appear beneath the search box as users type, web search refinements that allow users to sort results according to type (i.e. images, videos, news, real-time results and more). BlackBerry users will also have access to an improved image search that lets them easily preview images. Lastly, they will also get a local search feature that allows them to browse restaurants, shops and other popular business categories in the area.

BBM 6 is now available
This new bit of code brings support for BBM-connected applications — so you can chat within apps and both view and download your friends' favorite apps from lists on their BBM profiles. The new functionality means programs for real-time project collaboration are possible, as are new types of social gameplay. Then again, is there still any people left in the BBM camp?

BlackBerry App World 3.0 Beta now available to try

The changes are apparent from the off with a completely redesigned home screen which has re-prioritized functionality in the form of the new App World search bar. The search system allows you to sort by app name, price, rating, newest, best match and popular, in an attempt to streamline the search process. Underneath this sits the spotlight banner; showing the latest and most popular apps, akin to both the App Store and Android Market on their respective devices and rounding off the new home screen, there are now five new icons down at the bottom which are referred to as 'top level channels'. Two of the upper three icons, 'Games', and 'Themes' denote the most popular categories typically searched on the App World and the new 'My Account' option gives users easier/faster access to things like their BBID and payment options, handy.

Information on each app has now been consolidated into a single screen which you can swipe left or right with, in order to see its summary, screenshots and reviews. The 3.0 update coincides nicely with the announcement of three new devices alongside the launch of BB OS 7 and as with the enhancements to the OS, App World 3.0 has a focus on sharing. Team BlackBerry have tried to make it easier for users to share apps with their friends, with quick access to popular social services like Twitter and Facebook or SMS, email and BBM sharing.
It's a welcome improvement that helps move the Blackberry image forward and brings its app store more inline with its main competitors. RIM still need to think about how they can drive the 'cool' factor a little harder but this design definitely brings them up to date.

RIM Releases BlackBerry App World 3.0 Beta, Brings Lot Of Features & Improvements!
The new search from home screen feature enables users to quickly search for popular apps, games and themes right from the home screen, effortlessly. Secondly, two of the most popular App World categories including Games and Themes have been added to the homescreen as icons.
This allows the users to quickly browse through the games and themes available on the BlackBerry World right from the home screen, without having to launch the App World first and browse through the categories. Saves time and effort for BlackBerry aficionados (like us) who frequently hit the App World for interesting new themes and games.
Another interesting change is the Spotlight Banners that shows featured apps including the top 25 lists for Free, Paid, Recently Updated and New from the specified categories. The new BlackBerry World 3.0 features, among other things, the ability to share your favorite app or game, etc over social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Email, SMS, or even to a BBM contact or group in your list.
RIM has also added another new feature called My Account which allows you to easily access your BlackBerry account using your BBID. Besides, the barcode scanning feature has also been improvised.

RIM Unveils An Armada Of BlackBerry 7 Phones, Claims It's Third Largest BlackBerry Launch In History!
First in the series, the BlackBerry Torch 9810 features a large 3.7" screen with a display resolution of 800×48- pixels, a standard BlackBerry physical keyboard that slides smoothly from under the incredibly beautiful screen, and of course 1.2 GHz of sheer bit-crunching machine under the hood.
The CPU is flanked by 768MB of RAM. A 5 megapixel camera enables 720p HD video recording and impressive image shooting. This makes it the first of BB7 phones the first to feature HD-video recording.
RIM also announced BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9860. The BlackBerry 9850x9860 features a 3.7"capacitive touch display, same core-hardware under the hood as the BlackBerry 9810, a 5 megapixel HD camera, high-speed 4G internet connectivity and the fast and improved Wikitude browser.
The devices are set to launch on a number of carriers including AT&T which is marketing the BlackBerry Torch 2 as the first 4G BlackBerry phone available through its network. Users can take advantage of high-speed internet connectivity to browse the web, remain connected to their social networks, shop online and do much more.
Other interesting features include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, onboard GPS, digital compass, 8 gigabytes of onboard storage with support for up to 32GB of expandable memory using a microSD card, HSPA+ connectivity and much more.
Features include a 24-bit high resolution display, a 1.2 GHz processor, 720p HD video recording, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, social networking integration and much more.
The AT&T BlackBerry Torch 9810 will hit the shelves in August while the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and the BlackBerry Torch 9860 will be available in the market subsequently after the former launches.
AT&T, which has been carrying BlackBerry smartphones for over a decade, explains:
"Exclusive to AT&T customers, the next-generation 4G BlackBerry Torch 9810 is faster and more fluid with high performance hardware features and the new BlackBerry® 7 OS delivering an enhanced multimedia experience... A powerful evolution of the BlackBerry software, BlackBerry 7 OS delivers speed, efficiency and UI enhancements and enables new hardware capabilities, including HD video recording, more fluid and responsive graphics, digital compass, and augmented reality."
BlackBerry Torch 9810 is exclusive to AT&T customers while the BlackBerry Torch 9860 will be available through AT&T, Rogers, Telus and Bell. The BlackBerry Troch 9860, on the other hand, will be available through Sprint and U.S. Cellular.
RIM co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis stated that:
